JOURNAL SCOPE

The Agronomia Costarricense Journal, a semestral publication edited and financed by the Vice-Rectory for Research at University of Costa Rica, works with the support of professionals from the University of Costa Rica, the College of Agronomists and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock that conform the Editorial Team.

OBJECTIVE OF THE JOURNAL

The objective of the Agronomia Costarricense Journal, since its creation in 1977, is to publish, visualize and facilitate the access of agricultural and forestry research with topics of interest and scientific news of the sector.

Types of publication

-       Original and unpublished research papers, which have scientific or technical merit in the opinion of the Editorial Board.

-       Articles.

-       Technical notes, which are advances or parallel results of ongoing investigations.

-       Analysis and comments about relevant topics, requested from specialists.

-       Comprehensive literature reviews on a specific topic.

-       Book reviews.

Norms for publication

Manuscripts published in Agronomia Costarricense Journal are the result of a rigorous selection which includes the Editorial Board in first instance and the arbitration carried out by national and international specialists, through a double-blind peer review system.

Once the Editorial Board evaluates the scientific or technical merit of the manuscripts, they are sent with their respective evaluation form, to national and international specialists. The opinion can issue the following criteria:

-       The document is accepted without reservation.

-       It is accepted only if observations are included.

-       Not accepted at all for publication.

In case there is a controversy between the evaluations made for the same document, it is submitted to another specialist whose assessment guides the result to publish or not.

If the document is accepted, it is classified in one of the following categories:

-       Article

-       Technical note

-       Others: Analysis and commentary, literature review, book reviews

Articles can be written in Spanish or English. They must adjust to standards established for the structure of the manuscript. It is recommended for English manuscripts to be reviewed and corrected in advance by a specialist whose native language is English. The material received will not be returned to the authors.

-       Research papers should not exceed 20 pages and technical notes should not exceed 6 pages.

-       Agronomia Costarricense Journal does not charge for receiving or publishing manuscripts.

-       Manuscripts must be written in an updated version of Word for Windows with double spacing and font type Arial size 12.

-       The International System Units must be used.

-       Manuscript should be submitted by e-mail.

-       Tables should be presented in Word and in Excel the figures and graphs in different shades of gray, in ascending order by numbers and letters as appropriate. Tables and figures should be presented on separate pages printed in good quality. Other figures and photographs must be submitted in eps, jpg or tiff format with a minimum of 240-300 dpi.

Manuscripts structure

Author. Write the full name, with both last names separated by a hyphen as shown below: Serrano-Velázquez. It applies to co-authors as well. Write at the bottom of the page, using asterisks, the address at the time of conducting the research and the institutional email of the contact person.

The document presented will be evaluated within the modality of research article, technical note, literature reviews on a specific topic, book reviews, updates or analysis and comments on specific agricultural activities. However, the final decision on the modality for publication of the manuscript will be based on the criteria of the reviewers and recommendations of the members of the Editorial Board and the International Advisory Editorial Board.

 

ORCID Code. It serves to identify the author with a unique code that will differentiate him or her from any other person who publishes. This code is required to affiliate both the researcher and the publications he or she makes. The author must register the full name, email and password at the following link: http://orcid.org/

The link indicated above will automatically generate the ORCID code of the person who publishes. If a publication involves several authors, the ORCID must appear for each of the participants in the publication and not only for the person indicated as a contact for correspondence. The code must appear at the bottom of the page for each of the people participating in the publication.

 

Structured summary. The summary must be one paragraph in length detailing the objective of the work, the procedure, the main results and the conclusions should be indicated, in a maximum of 300 words maximum. The terms "Introduction, Objective, Materials and methods, Results and Conclusions" should be highlighted in bold to differentiate those contents within the summary. Include data in expressions like “higher or lower than, greater of less than”.

 

Abstract. It must be accurate to the summary in English and must include the title in Spanish.

 

Keywords.  Include up to 5-7 keywords which allow the user to easily locate on a digital platform the document.

 

Introduction. It should include the justification of the research, the most relevant antecedents up to that moment on the subject and the concrete objective of the article.

 

Materials and methods. It refers to all materials or methods required for the development of the research with a detailed description in order to achieve specific results. If the author requires a specialized program, the author must present a description and convenience of its use to achieve the results.

 

Results and discussion (may be presented together or separately). Its content is based on the results obtained from the objective stated in the research. Regardless of their complexity, they need to be exposed in a clear and simple manner. The results can be numbers, categories or groupings of the objects or subjects of study. The presentation of the results should be characterized by the accuracy and legitimacy of the facts and figures recorded, so that results are not based only on qualifications such as: much, little, more, less, or enough, because it could lead to an inaccurate interpretation which weakens the investigation.

 

COPYRIGHT

 

The author (s) must grant Agronomia Costarricense Journal the right of its first publication which will be registered with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 International license. Author (s) may include their publication in an institutional repository clarifying that the first publication was done in the Agronomía Costarricense Journal.

Once the volume of the respective period has been published, the digital version can be accessed, which allows managing a self-archive of the document or documents of interest, in the site selected by the author.

Otherwise, the main author must attest in writing, that the presented information is original and unpublished by any other media. Also, must have the authorization of the institution where the investigation was conducted.

 

ARCHIVE

The journal has the preservation of its digital archives, first, the archives are integrated into the database of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, which has a backup system, whose Policies and Norms can be found in the link: http://www.mag.go.cr/sgmag/Nomas-Politicas-Generales-TI-2022.pdf

Likewise, it has the digital support of the repository of the University of Costa Rica, and the administration and publication system of OJS journals. In addition, every six months the journal sends a CD, with the respective volume, to the National System of Libraries (SINABI); so there is an endorsement of the manuscripts.

The journal also uses the CLOCKSS system to create a distributed file among the participating libraries, allowing these libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for preservation and restoration purposes. More information can be found at the following link: http://thekeepers.org/

Ethic code

DUTIES OF THE EDITOR

The editor is responsible for all manuscripts and must check for original publications with scientific or technical merit in the opinion of the Editorial Board. By doing this, the editor can accept or reject a manuscript under the criteria established in the publication norms and its intellectual content without distinction of gender, sexual orientation, political or religious ideology, nationality or ethnic origin of the authors. Manuscripts will be sent to national and international specialists for double-blind peer review. Throughout the process, the editor must ensure confidentiality to the parties, so that information about the content of the manuscript, the names of the authors nor the names of the reviewers can be revealed.

 

DUTIES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Members of the Editorial Board are responsible for contributing with the assignment of national and international reviewers according to the subject of the received manuscript; they should also help with the preliminary review of manuscripts on matters related to their field and support with the update, improvement and periodic evaluation of the journal.

 

AUTHOR'S DUTIES

Authors must follow the criteria established in the publication norms of Agronomía Costarricense. Likewise, they must document in writing that the information presented is original, it has not been published in any other medium, it is not being considered for publication in another journal, and in addition, they must include a written authorization of the institution where it was generated. Authors should know that the use of data and information from other authors without citing them in the document and in the list of references, as well as the falsification of words of others to assume them as their own, is determined as plagiarism, so that the manuscript would not be considered for publication. In this way, authors must adequately cite bibliographic sources of the texts that contributed to the work presented. For authorship, it is necessary to write the names of co-authors who significantly contributed in the development of the study. Authors should write all the financial sources on which they were supported, as well as any economic or conflict of interest that could influence the results of the manuscript. Authors should not use the names of commercial products or brands® in the document, as it compromises the publication. Finally, if the author identifies an error in the manuscript, they must inform within 15 days after the last delivery of the corrections requested, to rac.cia@ucr.ac.cr.

 

DUTIES OF THE REVIEWERS

Reviewers must inform the editor about any unethical behavior identified in the manuscript and should provide critical contributions and constructive information for the improvement of the text, or for the rejection of it. They also should know that the material given to them for their evaluation must be treated with absolute confidentiality, for which reason they will not be able to reveal any data to third parties or use the information for personal projects.

Once the consultation is done, reviewers should promptly notify the editor, if they are able to review the corresponding manuscript. If so, they must perform the work objectively, so that their criticism must have valid arguments based on science and must not have any conflict of interest with the information presented or the authorship, aspects they must indicate before agreeing to evaluate the manuscript.

Plagiarism detection policy

By using Google tools and DupliChecker, Revista Agronomia Costarricense is vigilant of the sources used in the research to determine the use of original ideas without citation of the source or by using words from others without citing them in the document and/or in the references.

In the same way, plagiarism is incurred when the words of others are falsified to be assumed as their own or when it indicates to be the author of an investigation when its owner is another person. If plagiarism is detected, the principal author will be notified by writing.

 

Open access policy

This journal provides immediate free access to its content under the principle of making available free research to the public, which encourages greater exchange of global knowledge.
